Kidd's magic number - 44106818

Postby Jo on Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:35 am

When Captain Kidd was hung at our favourite London watering hole, now The Captain Kidd pub even in death, he managed to leave further intrigue in his wake. Once the death sentence had been bestowed upon his head, his wife was allowed to see him. It was rumoured that during their last meeting, Kidd handed his wife a piece of paper on which the following was written:

44106818

One website claims that this card has been preserved with the record of the trial (http://www.fishermensvoice.com/archives ... arney.html)

So, what could these numbers possibly mean? Could they be the co-ordinates to a primitive safety deposit box, the latitude and longitude pointing to his hidden treasure, or a more cryptic code?

The aforementioned website states that the latitude and longitude coordinates bring one to Deer Isle - a location which later became the basis for a story of Captain Kidd’s treasure written in 1889. Franklin Head claims Kidd’s treasure was found on Deer Isle by Jacob Astor and that it was the basis of the Astor fortunes....but could there be a link to our favourite island?!

I thought it might be worth starting a thread on this strange number, seeing we have quite a few people on here who enjoy looking into such patterns for clues and anomalies.

Jo:

I think you'll find with a little digging that the John Jacob Astor/Deer Island story re Kidd and those alleged numbers was in fact a celebrated (and admitted) hoax perpertuated by a Chicago industrialist back in 1894. Unfortuntely, it was later printed as fact by many early 20th century articles and books on piracy, and so the hoax kept self-perpetuating itself.

Thanks for clarifying D'Arcy. Wow, we're certainly putting the facts straight on quite a few stories this week - good work. Glad I'm not guilty of perpetuating the legend any further. Shame though, I enjoy these quirky little puzzles.

Jo,

Coincidence perhaps, however if you plug in 4410 6818 as coordinates, it lands you right in the middle of the Indian Ocean....

4410 6818 ..
4
4
1061= 8 plus 0 = 13
8
8
so here are 4 x 8 =32 plus 0 that represents 13 = 4
32 plus 4 = 36
88884 divide by [32] 5 =17776.8
88884 divide by [36] 9=9876
17776.1 - 9876 = 79008 note the order of numbers , very interesting

1468 was a leap year starting on Friday of the Julian calendar
[note] 1486 was a common year starting on Sunday of the Julian calendar

FP,

Too bad we don't know where Hawkins' sunken atoll was. I think I'll go read his website again.......

No, no no. You've got it all wrong!

If you substitute letters for numbers (where A = 1, etc.) what Kidd obviously wrote in his clever cypher was: DDAJFHAH.

Clearly, WK was code-texting his wife that: Dig Deep At Oak For Humungous Ancient Haul.

44106818 mystery solved!

1894 - was a common year starting on Mon. of the Gregorian calendar - or a common year starting on Sat. of the twelve
day slower Julian calendar .
