Oak Island Treasure UK event

Postby Jo on Sun Jun 28, 2009 11:40 am

It's getting to that time of year again - the annual meeting of UK Oak Island fans!

I won't pretend there are many of us, the truth being we're few and far between, but this year I remain hopeful!

The event will be taking place on Saturday 22nd August, the date closest to Oak Island Treasure's eighth birthday. Do come and celebrate with us if you can :)

When: Saturday 22nd August 2009 from midday

Where: The Captain Kidd Pub, Wapping, London, E1W 2NE

Warren has suggested hosting satelite events on the same day as the UK Captain Kidd meeting, seeing so many people on facebook have expressed frustration they can't attend. Would anyone be interested in this?

We've already got the Boston contingent, so are there any takers for a Halifax / Western Shore / Chester faction?

This is a great opportunity to show our support and appreciation for Jo's website, which has created a nice little global community on-line, in an old-fashioned manner over food and drink. All it takes is one person to volunteer to act as Jo's proxy and the local host for the meeting. I offered to host the festivities at an excellent English-style pub called The Old Spot http://www.theoldspot.com in Salem Massachusetts. I picked Salem for its historic charm, rich maritime traditions, and the presence of the New England Pirate Museum http://www.piratemuseum.com/, which might be fun to check out after a few libations.

Now I just need to convince Jo to call into the meeting on my cell phone, to give folks the chance to hear her voice and chat with her in real time!

I chose the date in August as it was closest to this website's 8th birthday, but I'm not suggesting this should be an Oak Island Treasure love in

It's just a chance to get people together to celebrate Oak Island, as we have recently done at Explore Oak Island Days, but this is an opportunity to do so in your local area, invite friends (well, those who don't think you're peculiar for following the Money Pit mystery) and then share your experience of the event with the rest of us by taking photos!

Those Oak Island Treasure Forum members who have been members for a while will remember Cerris Francis. I'm pleased to say that Cerris will be coming along to the UK meeting in The Captain Kidd this year. It will be nice to see him again after three years. He was keen that I let you know he plans to bring a photocopy of an authentic Captain William Kidd map that he believes even the British Museum have not seen. It should be an interesting afternoon!

Those who do not know Cerris can check out his website here: http://www.oakislandrevelations.com/

Today's the day! :)

It's a beautiful, sunny day in London and I'm getting ready to head out to The Captain Kidd pub in Wapping for the UK Oak Island meeting. I'm hoping other fans of the world's greatest treasure hunt will be joining me for a spot of lunch and plenty of discussion over our favourite hole in the ground!

Remember, no mater how far away from London you are, you can keep up to date with how the day progresses on Twitter, as I'll be tweeting live from the pub, so if you're interested you can stay tuned: http://www.twitter.com/OakIsland

While Oak Island was being buffeted by Hurricane Bill, we were basking on the sunshine on the Thames. Within the 2009 cohort we had a Dr of paleolimnology, a cartographer, a physicist and researcher 40+ years experience. You can see how we were gathering a few specialisms and the stage was set for heated debate.

We had a splendid afternoon discussing a variety of theories, maps, documents and scientific principles, in particular relation to the engineering of the pit, and the possible existence of additional shafts which Cerris believes to be connected to a much larger, overall system. It was interesting to hear these theories of Cerris' and also fill him in on how Oak Island had changed since we last met in 2006.

Despite Oak Island fans being few and far between, it was lovely to be sat in England discussing a tiny island over in Canada.

I've made a short video, as a number of people from our facebook group said how much they'd like to hear what was discussed and see the legendary spot where Kidd spent his final minutes before he was hanged.

I plan to get this edited this week and will post it here as soon as I can.

Roll on 5th October for the next meeting in Maine!

Some members of our facebook group asked if I might make a podcast or video of the meeting so they could see London and the old area of Wapping which still holds remnants of its nautical history today. You'll see that is stil evident in the building and street names in the video.

This video is a little rough and ready, and I wasn't able to film the actual discussions which took place on the day as people found this intrusive. Anyway, enjoy the Captain Kidd pub!
